The uncertainty over Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future at Liverpool is starting to come to a head.

It seems unbelievable that the Reds have gotten themselves into this position, but Alexander-Arnold is now out of contract in less than a year.

At just 25, the Liverpool vice-captain is coming into his peak and is one of the absolute key players in the first-team squad. There’s no way it should have gone this far.

For Arne Slot, he takes none of the blame for the jeopardy now surrounding Alexander-Arnold’s stay at his hometown club. And yet, it could be the new Liverpool head coach who feels the sting of FSG’s sloppiness.

As Slot acquaints himself with the players he has now taken charge of, the Dutchman has reportedly spoken to Alexander-Arnold about his plans for next season.

Trent Alexander-Arnold outlines his plan

Liverpool supporters have a right to feel aggrieved about the way the Alexander-Arnold situation has been handled.

The academy graduate should have been tied down to another contract at least a year ago.

With Real Madrid circling Alexander-Arnold, it certainly should not be taken for granted that the 25-year-old will put pen to paper and stay at Anfield.

Best friend Jude Bellingham has been trying to turn Trent’s head and that can be a powerful thing. Liverpool need to get some control back over proceedings.

Fortunately, the Liverpool ECHO claim that Bellingham’s friendship with Alexander-Arnold is not an indication that anything between the Reds and Real is imminent.

On the contrary, although the pair are currently said to be holidaying in the US together, there is said to be ‘nothing to suggest’ that Trent is looking to leave Liverpool.

Even if the Scouser were keen to move, there is claimed to be ‘no appetite’ at Anfield to sell him on the cheap a year out from the ending of his contract.

Instead, there are reportedly ‘reasons to be optimistic’ that Alexander-Arnold will stay at Liverpool in the long-term. The right-back is also said to have already spoken over the phone with Slot.

It was a conversation in which Trent reportedly ‘talked up his determination to hit the ground running’ under the new boss and ‘detailed explicitly’ his committment to Liverpool for the coming season.

Will Alexander-Arnold leave for nothing?

Although the ECHO put it quite strongly that Alexander-Arnold will not leave Liverpool this summer, this does still leave the question open about a new contract.

If the Reds are keen not to sell the England international for a cut price fee this year, though, then the thought of him going for nothing at the end of next season is unbearably bad.

Nevertheless, there does not appear to be anything close to being done for Trent.

The ECHO do claim that renewing the deal will be ‘one of Richard Hughes’ first ports of call’ when Alexander-Arnold returns from holiday. But it seems that nothing is in the works just yet.

Lastly, it’s touched on that a ‘wage packet that reflects his current status’ will be needed in order for Alexander-Arnold to refresh his terms. But that goes without saying, really. For us, this gets done. Liverpool aren’t half leaving it late, though.
