Liverpool are badly in need of sorting out some big contract situations this summer.
The Reds have allowed themselves to get stuck in a situation whereby three of their best players could leave on a free next year.
Obviously, all three situations are different. Both Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are now into their 30’s. They are still huge players in this Liverpool squad, but you can understand some hesitation in offering new, bumper deals to both.
For Trent Alexander-Arnold, there is simply no excuse. The Liverpool academy graduate is just 25 and is still yet to even reach his peak.
Already one of Liverpool’s best players for years, Alexander-Arnold should be the present and future of the club.

Real Madrid monitoring Trent Alexander-Arnold
Unfortunately, for whatever reason, Alexander-Arnold has been allowed to slip into the last year of his contract.
The Liverpool owners are usually very smart and thoughtful in the way they approach every aspect of managing the Reds, but FSG have really dropped the ball on Alexander-Arnold.
There doesn’t seem to be be too much panic over the prospect of losing Trent, which suggests that a new deal will eventually be signed.
However, already just a month out from the start of a new season, nothing has been sorted yet. That is cause for real worry and has reportedly meant that Alexander-Arnold is now on Real Madrid’s radar.

Talk of Madrid moving for Alexander-Arnold ramped up after an update from German journalist Christian Falk on Tuesday, which intimated that things were now ‘concrete’ between the two parties.
However, taking to his Daily Briefing on Wednesday, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that things have not changed between Madrid and Alexander-Arnold since March.
“There’s no update on Trent Alexander-Arnold at the moment,” says Romano. “I shared in March that Real Madrid are monitoring the situation and this remains the case, nothing fresh or new so far.
“Real Madrid are just attentive to many situations of good players with short contracts, Alexander-Arnold is one of them.”
Will Trent Alexander-Arnold leave Liverpool?
Alexander-Arnold is never too far away from the news. The right-back has been consistently talked about right the way through this summer.
It has not been transfer talk for the main part, though. Instead, there has been a backlash to the way Gareth Southgate used Alexander-Arnold during Euro 2024.
With so much debate around what his best position is though, and under so much scrutiny from the media, there is a worry that Trent will have had enough, and will pack up for Spain.
In that scenario, Liverpool would surely have to sell Alexander-Arnold this summer. His value is simply too high to justify letting him leave for nothing in a year’s time.
Ultimately, we don’t think this will happen. But Liverpool have to move quickly once Trent is back at the AXA Training Centre this summer and learn lessons for the future. Nervous times.
