Jurgen Klopp has spoken on the phone with ‘world class’ player, Liverpool have made an offer

Although he’s entering into his final couple of months as Liverpool manager, there’s still plenty for Jurgen Klopp to do.

At the moment, that remit is largely pertaining to steering the Reds squad through an injury crisis. As they prepare to take on Luton Town this evening Liverpool are looking low on numbers.

But aside from those duties, perhaps Klopp could still be a part of convincing any prospective summer signings to join the club. The manager won’t be there, but that doesn’t mean he can’t necessarily help with some early bits of recruitment.

One reported target who definitely won’t convinced to move to Liverpool any which way though is Kylian Mbappe. The PSG superstar has long been linked with the Reds and even now as he closes in on Real Madrid, French outlet le10 Sport put Liverpool in the picture.

They claim that with Klopp having already spoken to Mbappe on the phone in the past, the Reds have finally made their move. After watching Real Madrid and then Manchester United reportedly make offers to the 25-year-old, Liverpool are said to have ‘tried their luck’ too.

However, this will seemingly be to no avail. Although Klopp and Mbappe’s personal relationship is said to be ‘excellent,’ the German’s Anfield exit is claimed to have put Liverpool’s appeal to the player in ‘jeopardy.’ As a result, the Reds – and United – are reportedly ‘far behind’ Real Madrid. No chance.

Mbappe on his way to Madrid

If any Liverpool supporters had been holding on to the possibility of Mbappe joining this summer, then Klopp’s unexpected departure will have surely ended it.

The World Cup winner has previously been said to be a fan of the Reds boss and the way he plays football.

As a result of that, it had always felt like a possibility that Mbappe might somehow move to Anfield. A very, very outside possibility it must be said, but a possibility all the same.

But, ultimately, it was never at all realistic. The links did keep appearing in the media, but as Alan Pardew recently said, that felt like more because of the player’s relationship and admiration of Klopp more than anything else.

With a deal as big as the one that’s going to take Mbappe from Paris to Madrid, that just isn’t going to be enough. And judging by some of the reports of how big the France international’s signing on fee is at the Bernabeu, he was always out of Liverpool’s reach.

Truthfully, it’s hard to believe that the Reds would have made one last, desperate throw of the dice here.

Without Klopp or a sporting director to sell the project, it just doesn’t make any sense that they would have. Still, with a player who Virgil van Dijk called ‘world-class’ on the market, maybe they thought they may as well.

Either way, Mbappe is now – finally – Madrid bound. After years of speculation and talk of phone calls with Klopp, this can be put to bed once and for all.
