Even without knowing exactly who’ll be in charge next summer, Liverpool continue to be linked with doing plenty of business.
Yesterday, the focus was on Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal, who is reported to be a target no matter who replaces Jurgen Klopp as manager.
And another to be constantly mentioned alongside Liverpool is PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe. The latest is that Mbappe approached the Reds last year, only to be told his demands were far too high.
Now, speaking on CBS Sports Golazo last night, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has dismissed the chances of Mbappe joining his old club. Put to him by presenter Kate Abdo, Carragher declared the 25-year-old all set for Real Madrid instead.
“I think widely the feeling in football is that he will no longer be at PSG next season but rather at Real Madrid,” began Abdo. “But I guess that is the big question still. There’s been no confirmation officially he’s going to Spain and to Real Madrid. There’s been talk of Liverpool Jamie, talk of him following in the footsteps of another French great and going to Arsenal.”
“He’s going to Real Madrid isn’t he,” claimed Carragher, but not before scoffing at the idea of Arsenal getting their hands on him, too. We think you’re right, Carra.
Mbappe heading to Madrid
Mbappe finds himself in a really odd situation this summer. Although he’s arguably the best player in the world at the moment, he’s strangely limited in where he can leave PSG for.
Of course, any club would be interested in signing the Frenchman. But his wage demands are making it impossible for the usual suspects to realistically entertain it.
Indeed, his flirtations with Liverpool actually seem a little one-sided. The Reds would love to have him onboard, there’s no question of that.
But in reality, they’ve got to know that Mbappe’s remarkable salary is beyond something they want to pay. Perhaps they could afford to sign him, but that doesn’t mean they should smash through their wage structure to do so.
The World Cup winner himself has clearly explored that option, though. As he seemingly has with Arsenal as well.

However, unless he gets real and brings himself more in line with what the top earners at both clubs are taking home, he won’t be considered.
Unbelievably, Real Madrid are also seemingly having some trouble matching Kylian’s demands. As a result, the forward is now in limbo.
For the time being, that doesn’t seem to be affecting his performances. Mbappe was on form for PSG in the Champions League last night, scoring against Real Sociedad.
Carragher will probably end up being right, with the superstar heading where superstars love to head. Failing that, he’ll stay at PSG. Liverpool may keep on being brought up, but it’ll surely ultimately be irrelevant.
