Former Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew has shared his theory over why Liverpool are being constantly linked with Kylian Mbappe.
As things stand, Mbappe is set to leave PSG on a free transfer at the end of the season. Real Madrid would appear to be the favourites to land him, but suggestions that the Frenchman could join Liverpool haven’t gone away.
And speaking to TalkSPORT about those transfer stories, Pardew said that it was all down to Reds manager Jurgen Klopp.
“I think the link to Liverpool is all about the relationship Klopp had with him,” said the 62-year-old.
“They almost did a transfer with him and they got on well. I think too much has been said about that, that isn’t how business is done, liking players and loving each other. It’s about the deal.”
Pardew dismisses Liverpool Mbappe links
This is a strange reaction from Pardew. It isn’t that he’s necessarily wrong, but how a player feels about a potential new coach is obviously going to play a part in things here.
Of course, that can’t be the only reason a transfer gets done. He’s right in that if Liverpool can’t stretch to Mbappe’s massive wages and signing on fee then it doesn’t matter if Klopp’s his best mate. It won’t happen.
Nevertheless, there is something to be said for the Reds boss striking up a rapport with the 25-year-old.
The way that Mbappe seems to operate, if there were nothing in the rumours that he likes Liverpool a great deal, he’d publicly shut them down.
On the contrary though, the France international has talked up the Reds before. A transfer would obviously be of interest to him and if that’s all down to Klopp, then what’s the problem with that?

We’d still be incredibly surprised to see Mbappe rock up at Anfield in the summer. But there’s often no smoke without fire where the transfer market is concerned.
Klopp is undoubtedly Liverpool’s biggest draw right now. There surely isn’t a player on the planet who wouldn’t love to work with the German.
Every top club has an ace to play when it comes to attracting new signings. Jurgen is Liverpool’s. That he’s been able to get the Reds in the picture for bringing in one of world football’s biggest stars is testament to that, whether it happens or – more likely – not.
