Staff at Liverpool are excited over the potential one of their academy youngsters is showing.
It has been another good season for the Reds academy so far. With Trent Alexander-Arnold promoted to vice-captain and Curtis Jones developing nicely, Liverpool already have two home-grown bona fide stars.
Jarell Quansah has shown that he could be another, while a number of other prospects have featured for the first-team this season, too.
One of those who hasn’t made his debut yet but could do soon is 16-year-old midfielder Trey Nyoni. Nyoni has been a hit since arriving from Leicester City in the summer, earning special praise from Virgil van Dijk.
And now, asked to name an academy youngster who fans may not have heard about for the Blood Red: Liverpool FC Podcast, journalist Paul Gorst says Nyoni is one who’s causing a stir at the AXA Training Centre.
“Well I like Trey Nyoni,” says Gorst. “He’s only been there a few months but he’s already making the bench for the senior games and they think massively of him at Kirkby. He’s a bit of a goalscoring midfielder; he got the winner in the mini derby in September. I like the look of him and you can see why Liverpool made great efforts to get him in from Leicester.”

Still only 16, it wouldn’t be wise to put too much pressure on the young shoulders of Nyoni. But having said that, it would be surprise if we didn’t see him at senior level within the year. He’s our young player to watch in 2024.
As Gorst mentions, he’s already scored a couple of notable goals for Liverpool this season, including a hat-trick in a friendly.
The teenager scored three goals in four games at U18 level before being promoted to the U21s. There, Nyoni is yet to score, but he has been invited to train with the first-team.
Given that he’s already made the bench a couple of times – most recently against Arsenal in the FA Cup – Trey is obviously on Jurgen Klopp’s radar.

From there, if he keeps on training well, he’ll surely get his chance.
With the business end of the season now approaching, it would be a slight shock to see that happen in 2023/24. But it remains to be seen just how seriously Klopp takes the latter stages of the Europa League. Nyoni may get an opportunity there.
More likely would be that the former Leicester youngster is given his chance to make an impression in pre-season this summer.
If he can do that, then there’s no telling where he can go. Nyoni clearly has the talent and has caught the eye of Liverpool staff. The next step is turning that potential into results on the pitch. Keep an eye on this young man.
