Celtic are being put off by the wages of a potential transfer target at Liverpool.
The Glaswegian giants are currently being managed once again by former Reds boss Brendan Rodgers. Rodgers has already raided his old club once this season, taking Nat Phillips on-loan last summer.
That move ultimately didn’t work out. With Celtic not convinced enough to extend the half-season arrangement, Phillips has since returned to Liverpool.
The disappointment of the 26-year-old’s stint at Parkhead reportedly hasn’t put the Hoops off from further shopping at Anfield, though. Football Scotland now report that Celtic are interested in signing back-up goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
With Kelleher very much second-choice at Liverpool, there have been rumblings about his future for a while now. And Football Scotland claim that this has led to interest North of the border, with the 25-year-old ‘admired’ at Celtic.
Nevertheless, it reportedly won’t be straightforward to get him. Kelleher’s salary is said to be ‘outside of Celtic’s wage structure’ right now. While Rodgers is claimed to like Caoimhin as a potential successor to current No.1 Joe Hart, a potential bidding war for Kelleher’s services will reportedly be ‘problematic’ for the Scots as well.
Celtic priced out of Kelleher move
This is an interesting nugget of information which really highlights the disparity between English and Scottish football.
Kelleher is a back-up player at Liverpool. Now a senior professional and a big part of Jurgen Klopp’s squad, the Ireland international will be on a good wage.
But having come through the academy not too many years ago – and played just 32 games since – he won’t exactly be a top earner at Anfield.
Regardless of that, it seems that Kelleher may still be out of reach for Celtic at this stage.

From our point of view, that’s a real shame. It isn’t as though we’d like rid of Caoimhin, he’s once again proven himself to be a good back-up this season.
But at 25, he needs to go out and get himself a No.1 shirt somewhere. Celtic would be a phenomenal place for him to do that.
Playing for an enormous club consistently in European competition would be great for Kelleher. He’d surely be guaranteed game time and could therefore steak his claim to be Ireland’s permanent No.1
If Celtic can’t afford him though, then there’ll surely be other teams out there who can. Kelleher has played a fair amount this season and is promised more game time in the months ahead, too. Let’s see if he can convince the Hoops that he’s worth the money.
