David Ornstein has given his take on Kylian Mbappe’s transfer situation, as Liverpool continue to be linked with the PSG superstar.

The Reds have regularly been cited as one of the teams ready to offer Mbappe a safe landing spot should he leave PSG this summer.

However, with Real Madrid also long-term admirers, it has always felt like a very long shot. And now, journalist Ornstein has weighed in while speaking to Rio Ferdinand’s FIVE podcast.

“What Kylian Mbappe earns possibly can only really be paid at PSG, possibly Real Madrid,” began the transfer expert.

“We see Liverpool linked with him, I don’t know the credibility of those suggestions.

“If this guy’s available everybody’s going to have interest in him but again it doesn’t translate into a signing. PSG are really relaxed about the situation from what I know. If he wants to continue with them and he wants to re-sign then they’ll do it gladly.”

Liverpool distanced from Mbappe move

No matter how many times the likes of Ornstein attempt to put a pin in this kind of talk, it still does continue.

At some point, you do have to wonder whether there’s no smoke without fire.

All intuition would suggest that Liverpool have no business even being in the Mbappe conversation. Perhaps they could be if they really wanted to, but paying out such enormous sums to players isn’t the way they tend to do business.

But then again, with the 25-year-old reportedly a big fan of watching Liverpool play, and talks having been conducted with Jurgen Klopp in the past, you never know.

As Ornstein says, the admiration will be there, Mbappe is one of the world’s top players. On a continent that can no longer boast Lionel Messi, the Frenchman is quite possibly the very best in Europe right now.

Maybe the Reds just see the chance to sign a player like that on a free transfer as too good a chance to pass up.

Ornstein doesn’t categorically rule Liverpool out from entering the bidding. With six months left on his deal in Paris, we’ll just have to wait and see how it pans out.

One thing that is for sure is that we haven’t heard the last about Kylian heading to Anfield in 2024. Strap yourselves in.
