Liverpool now in the mix to sign 25-year-old six years after missing out on him

Liverpool ‘have a chance’ of pulling off a sensational transfer in summer 2024.

The Reds are currently gearing up for the January transfer window. But although plenty of players are being linked, it seems set to be a relatively quiet one for Liverpool.

Next summer there are likely to be a number of holes that need plugging, though. And according to French journalist Loic Tanzi, Jurgen Klopp could be set to get his hands on a long-held target: PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe.

“Liverpool wanted him when he was playing for Monaco [in 2017],” Tanzi told TalkSPORT today. “Klopp went to see him and they were negotiating while they were on the plane.

“The relationship between him, Liverpool, and Klopp is there. I think they have a chance.”

Liverpool in with Mbappe shout

For all that it seems virtually impossible to happen, Mbappe has continuously been linked with Liverpool over the years.

With his contract set to end at PSG next summer, the rumours have really ramped up of late. There have even been claims that the 25-year-old loves watching the Reds under Klopp.

Nevertheless, Real Madrid still appear to be favourites to land Mbappe. Either that or he does as he did in 2022 and signs a new deal to stay on in Paris.

If either of those two things fails to come about though, Liverpool should be right in the mix.

In the past, with Sadio Mane lining up on the Reds left-hand side, there has felt to be no real room for Mbappe. But with Luis Diaz toiling of late, the Frenchman would be a huge upgrade.

Without a transfer fee, Mbappe would technically be one heck of a free transfer for Liverpool. However, given the wages involved, agent costs and everything else that would come with a move like this, it would still be mega one, financially.

For us, the prospect of potentially bringing one of world football’s biggest superstars to Anfield is one that should be taken seriously.

It would be huge outlay for Liverpool and would take them into uncharted territory. But having kept their powder dry for so long, it would be the kind of player that Klopp richly deserves to get his hands on.

The closer we inch towards Mbappe’s contract ending, expect to see more of this. Until things are completely sorted one way or another, it seems like Liverpool will stay just about in the running.
