As Liverpool head into the January transfer window, there are a few issues that could do with addressing.
Still top of a lot of supporters wish lists would be a brand new specialist defensive midfielder. And although it now looks like Joao Palhinha won’t be coming, plenty will be hoping that Jurgen Klopp will have someone similar up his sleeve.
Meanwhile, injuries to Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas mean Liverpool look a touch light at left-back. Perhaps Fulham could provide the answers there instead, with Antonee Robinson now rumoured to be a target.
Away from that though, we think that the Reds’ most pressing issue is the need to add a new centre-half. Jarell Quansah has coped brilliantly with the additional responsibility following Joel Matip’s season-ending issue. But he’s still learning the ropes. Fresh blood may be needed.
Another potential problem is at right-back, where Trent Alexander-Arnold remains the only natural, senior option. Not only could a new addition help ease the strain on Trent, it would also allow him to push on into midfield.
In regards to these last two topics, this week’s rumours linking Liverpool with Ajax’s Devyne Rensch could be just what the doctor ordered.
Rensch the answer to Liverpool’s prayers
Liverpool already posses a player who can feature across their back line. His name is Joe Gomez and he’s proven his worth 100 times over this season alone.
But with Gomez beginning to be stretched a bit too thin, Klopp would be wise to add another utility man. Rensch can be that signing.
It’s true that the 20-year-old has featured by and large as a right-back for Ajax. But that’s fine. Gomez is more centre-back than right-back but can do both. To have a player more right-back than centre-back but can also play both would be brilliant.
We’re not quite sure what Klopp’s long-term plan is for Alexander-Arnold. The player himself clearly sees his future in midfield, though.

That’s all well and good, but until Liverpool bring in a proper replacement at full-back, Trent isn’t moving.
Some would be happy enough with that. However, if Alexander-Arnold isn’t, then who’s to say he won’t look to move to a club where he can play in his favoured position.
Bringing in someone like Rensch would be a clear signal to the Scouser that he’s got competition and is perhaps being earmarked for a different role. Maybe this could help along contract talks with Trent, with his current deal set to end in 2025.
Even at centre-back, Liverpool don’t need someone to come in and start straight away. They’ve got the position largely covered, so could more just do with a player who can step in during an emergency situation. Rensch could absolutely be that guy. In a team that values versatility, Devyne might just be the perfect signing.
