Liverpool seriously considering signing £2m former Everton defender

Liverpool are aiming to dip into the January transfer window to solve their current problems at left-back.

Having already seen Andy Robertson ruled out for a number of months back in October, Liverpool are now dealing with a serious injury to Kostas Tsimikas, too.

With both first and second choice out for some time still, Joe Gomez is currently filling in on the left. Although Gomez has done well in the position so far, he isn’t a natural there.

Luckily, there’s just a handful of days left before the Reds can do business again. And according to journalist Graeme Bailey, that’s exactly what they intend to do.

Taking to X on Wednesday morning, Bailey claimed that Liverpool are ‘looking at’ doing a deal for Fulham defender Antonee Robinson.

“Understand Liverpool are looking at Fulham’s Antonee Robinson – as they look to solve their left back issues,” writes the journalist.

Liverpool look to Robinson

History would tell us that Liverpool aren’t necessarily interested in solving long-term problems with short-term solutions. As a result, we’d be slightly sceptical of these links.

It isn’t that Robinson wouldn’t be a decent option for the Reds. In fact, his showing at Anfield earlier this month proved that the 26-year-old could actually be a superb addition to Liverpool.

But rather, the Reds simply don’t need a third left-back in the squad.

It’s frustrating – and potentially damaging – that Robertson and Tsimikas are injured at the same time. With Gomez also cover at centre-back and right-back, Liverpool are probably too reliant on him right now, too.

But what happens when both players return to fitness? Robertson is 29 but is far from over the hill and after a rocky period, Tsimikas has recently stepped up exceptionally in the Scotsman’s absence.

Furthermore, the Greek signed a new contract earlier in the season. He’s obviously in Jurgen Klopp’s plans. With Robertson also incredibly unlikely to be going anywhere, we just don’t see how this gets off the ground.

Factor in Robinson’s history as a youth team player across the park at Everton, and we just don’t think it’s an option right now.

The USA international has been a superb signing for Fulham at just £2m and looks like he could play at a higher level. But unless Tsimikas’ injury is even more severe than first expected, we can’t imagine this one gets very far.
