Liverpool could still have £87m attacker on their radar right now

Liverpool may still be planning a move for one of the most in-form attackers in Europe this season.

With six goals and nine assists in 17 games for Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen, Florian Wirtz has been on fire. This stunning form has seen him linked with Liverpool ahead of a possible transfer next year.

According to The Daily Mail journalist Lewis Steele though, nothing is ‘imminent’ in terms of Wirtz, but that doesn’t mean that the Reds aren’t tracking him.

“There’s no concrete interest yet in Florian Wirtz but that doesn’t mean he is not on Liverpool’s radar,” Steele said in a Q&A with Liverpool fans. “They look at a lot of players.

“Reports in Germany suggest this one is a lot more advanced than it is. He’s a great player and his statistics are excellent, with Xabi Alonso helping find a new level to his game.

“It’s one to watch in the future but nothing happening yet.”

Nothing imminent for Wirtz

None of this is a surprise to hear. That Liverpool would be interested in signing Wirtz is predictable. He’s seemingly been on their radar for a while and has really kicked things up this season.

The Reds are always on the lookout for ways to improve their forward line and adding the 20-year-old would be a sure-fire way of doing that.

But it’s also unsurprising to see that nothing is happening right this minute for Wirtz.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has also recently reported that he expects the German international to stay at Leverkusen in January. It seems much more likely that Wirtz will be on the move in the summer.

All of that might well depend on just how far Alonso’s Leverkusen go this season. Early signs are that they’re about to be a real force under Alonso. Perhaps Wirtz will want to stay and be a part of that.

Nevertheless, there have been claims that the youngster is ‘dreaming’ of Barcelona which might be a worry for Liverpool.

Another worry could be his price-tag. There have been reports that Wirtz could cost as much as £87m when a transfer is finally arranged. That’s likely to be beyond the Reds’ budget.

For now though, Liverpool would be wise to keep watching. The whole of Europe is impressed by Leverkusen right now, and Wirtz is the jewel in the crown. If there’s a chance of him coming to Anfield, the Reds have to keep their beaks in.
