Report: Liverpool firmly in the mix for Florian Wirtz; could be record fee

Liverpool want Florian Wirtz, according to reports. The Reds have a long-standing interest there.

This comes from SportBild. They say that Liverpool are among a number of clubs with interest in Florian Wirtz.

They joined Bayern Munich and Manchester City, primarily. There’s also now interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies presumably see Wirtz as a long-term building block.

But Liverpool’s interest is long-standing. They’ve had eyes on Wirtz for some time and, like Bayern & City, are in touch with the player’s parents.

Wirtz has exploded as a superstar this season at just 18. He was impressive last season but appears to have hit another level for Bayer Leverkusen over the current campaign.

He has four goals and six assists in the Bundesliga over just 523 minutes. Wirtz has contributed a goal or assist in nearly every game, too – this isn’t a case of one or two performances inflating his stats.

It’s hardly a shock that Wirtz is a Golden Boy nominee, then. Tuttosport named him as a contender this month.

Liverpool like Florian Wirtz

There’s a key part of the article from SportBild. They say that Leverkusen don’t want to sell Wirtz before 2023 and that they believe his value will soar above £100m.

And we imagine that’s right on both counts.

The way Wirtz is playing, his value will only skyrocket as he continues to prove himself. He’ll still only be 20 in 2023, too – there’s no reason for his value to depreciate.

As for whether he’s worth £100m, that’s another question. At his current rate of development, that seems very reasonable to assume. Especially as a slightly older Kai Havertz joined Chelsea for around £70m in a year when finances plummeted.

Liverpool must decide if he’s worth that to them, then. By 2023, there’s a very good chance he will be.
