Don Hutchison suggests £10m man could actually be Liverpool’s next captain, not Virgil Van Dijk

Jurgen Klopp has a ‘fair few contenders’ to choose from as he prepares to pick Liverpool’s next captain.

The manager probably wasn’t expecting to be in the position losing his captain and vice-captain this summer. But with James Milner leaving on a free transfer and Jordan Henderson being on the verge of a move to Saudi Arabia, that’s where we are.

While not ideal, it does mean that opportunity knocks for other members of the Liverpool squad. Virgil van Dijk is widely expected to take the armband on a permanent basis, having filled in for Milner and Henderson over the years. But asked whether he’d pick the Dutchman on ESPN FC, former Liverpool midfielder Don Hutchison says Klopp does have other options.

“Yeah maybe [Virgil van Dijk will be captain], or Andy Robertson maybe at left-back,” said the pundit. “I think there’s a fair few contenders, Alisson in goal, I think there’s contenders all over the pitch really.

“I don’t think they’ll be shy in appointing the captain. I don’t think that’ll be a priority at the present time for Jurgen Klopp.”

Liverpool not short of leaders

Hutchison is absolutely right here. Some may be worried about the prospect of replacing both Milner and Henderson in one summer. But the truth is that Liverpool still have leadership and experience littered throughout the squad.

Robertson is a good shout. The 29-year-old has been Scotland captain since 2018 and is now one of the longest-serving players in the squad.

He’s come a long way since his £10m arrival from Hull City back in 2017. One of the most vocal in the dressing room, Robbo would surely be a popular choice.

As would Alisson, who only yesterday displayed his credentials by declaring his love of being a Liverpool player. Five years on from his arrival, the 30-year-old’s status as one of the best in his position commands instant authority.

Trent Alexander-Arnold may be another under consideration by Klopp. At 24, handing him the captaincy now could be a way of securing the future. With many of the other candidates in or close to their 30’s, Trent is the long-term option.

Mohamed Salah is another clear leader in the team, while new boy Dominik Szoboszlai is the Hungarian national team captain.

But the obvious choice is Van Dijk. The Dutchman led the Reds out yesterday in a clear sign that he’s set for the job on a permanent basis. Robertson, Alexander-Arnold and Salah all started, but Virgil was given the nod. It’s an important decision that holds enormous prestige. And the 32-year-old has absolutely earned it.
