Liverpool see absolutely no point in moving to sign ‘fantastic’ player right now

Chelsea will automatically reject any offers they receive for reported Liverpool target Levi Colwill.

Colwill is reportedly on the Reds radar as they search for a left-footed centre-back to add to their squad. However, with Chelsea unwilling to sell the 20-year-old, journalist Ben Jacobs has suggested that Liverpool’s interest isn’t especially active.

“Brighton would love to sign Colwill permanently, but Chelsea have made their position crystal clear,” Jacobs wrote on Twitter.

“LFC only distant admirers. They are well aware of his talent and potential, but see no point moving without any sense they can succeed.

“As previously reported, Colwill would have to really force a move for anything to change and no reason to do this providing he’s given a clear pathway. Chelsea quite happy to pretty much auto-reject any incoming offers should they arrive.”

Chelsea determined to keep Colwill

As things stand, it would be a real surprise if Liverpool were able to bring Colwill to the club this summer.

Chelsea appear absolutely determined not to lose the young centre-back and will likely go to some lengths to keep him. That’s an understandable position. Why would they want to lose a player labelled ‘fantastic’ by Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi [The Argus]?

For Liverpool, it’s clear that they’re are big admirers of Colwill, but for the moment nothing looks imminent.

Of course, that could still change. As Jacobs points out, the former Huddersfield Town loanee currently has no reason to push for a move just yet. But should showdown talks with Mauricio Pochettino not go the way he wants, there is scope that he’ll do that.

We saw from a controversial photo he posted last season that he may not be especially committed to Chelsea. There have also been reports that the centre-back will put his emotion to one side when deciding his future.

So, if Colwill feels he isn’t getting the responses he wants from Pochettino, you can see him demanding to be let go.

At that point, Chelsea would still be within their rights to auto-reject any bid that came their way. But an unhappy player is never something any manager wants around, especially not a new manager. It would be within the Blues best interests to sell Colwill in that scenario.

For now though, that feels a way off. You get the impression that Liverpool may keep their watching brief over the England U21 man for some time to come, but whether it ever gets more serious than that feels dubious.
