Mauricio Pochettino reportedly wants to make Levi Colwill a key player at Chelsea, with the centre-back rumoured to be a target for Liverpool this summer.

According to Football London, the Argentine coach is a fan of the 20-year-old defender, with Chelsea as a club impressed with how far Colwill has developed in the last 12 months. Though there is no guarantee that Pochettino will be able to convince the youngster to stay at Stamford Bridge.

As per the report, Liverpool are interested in signing Colwill with Brighton & Hove Albion already having a £40m bid rejected by Chelsea for the England youth international this summer. Though Pochettino’s latest stance on the centre-back could be key in the coming weeks.

Colwill is eager to play regular Premier League football next season. And although Liverpool could be the perfect club for the 20-year-old, starting on a week-to-week basis could be difficult even with Jurgen Klopp’s side competing in the UEFA Europa League.

Indeed, Colwill’s career could benefit massively with a departure from Chelsea. Yet with Pochettino now willing to make the defender a key part of his plans for next season, Liverpool now have a real chance of missing out on the defender this summer.

Colwill always looked likely to leave Chelsea this summer given the club’s lacklustre approach to fielding youth players in recent years. However, this update could now see the defender stay in west London if Pochettino is true to his word and makes the centre-back a key player, much to Liverpool’s dismay.

As we know, the Reds could have been the perfect club for Colwill to take his next steps in the Premier League. Yet with Chelsea now looking to play the defender next season, Liverpool could be powerless in their attempt to bring the England youth international to Anfield this summer.
