Liverpool ready to pay huge fee to sign ‘fantastic’ defender, they’ve spoken with his agents

Liverpool would be willing to pay big money in order to sign Chelsea defender Levi Colwill this summer.

The Reds have been heavily linked with Colwill as his future at Stamford Bridge hangs in the balance. So far, it looks as though the 20-year-old will be staying put though, with Chelsea reportedly adamant that he won’t be sold.

But speaking to Redmen TV yesterday, journalist David Lynch has been talking up Liverpool’s interest in Colwill. According to Lynch, the Reds will move if given even a hint of encouragement from Chelsea.

“I think they’d absolutely love to [sign Colwill],” he said. “If there was even a hint of a possibility that they could make this work I think Liverpool would do it. They really like him. He’s home grown, he fits the bill in so many ways. He would be the ideal signing in that position I think.

“It’s a difficult one, Brighton have already given up, it looks like they’ll go for Calvin Bassey instead because they didn’t get the impression they could get a deal over the line. But Liverpool have got a lot more money than Brighton and probably the ability to do a deal at a bigger amount than Brighton were in for.

“Maybe if it gets to the point where he says ‘I’m not going to sign a contract’ further down the line this summer, he doesn’t feel there are guarantees enough over his playing time, maybe that option opens up for Liverpool and they can really pursue it.

“I know there’s been contact on the agents side, they’re keeping tabs on him. It’s one that if they get even the slightest bit of encouragement that they could do a deal with Chelsea I think they would pay a big fee for him.”

Liverpool ready for Colwill fight

As Liverpool’s summer window starts to take shape, we’re beginning to get a clearer picture of where the land lies.

In terms of a centre-back, it’s been reported for several months that the Reds want one, and a left-footed one at that.

Obviously, the midfield has been the priority up until now. But with that now almost done, attention will soon switch to whether Liverpool can get a deal done to strengthen their back line.

With that in mind, Colwill is clearly someone to keep an eye on. Chelsea are making a show of their desire to keep hold of the academy graduate, but it isn’t very much like Liverpool to hang around in a race they know they can’t win. They must have been given some kind of hope from the player’s camp.

As Lynch says, it feels as though the Reds will pounce if the West Londoners soften their stance even a bit. It seems as though Brighton are out of the race already, and Liverpool would fancy their chances of convincing a player who loves Steven Gerrard.

There may well be other targets who are currently more get-able in the window. Goncalo Inacio is one, with the Sporting man’s contract containing a relatively small release clause.

But if Liverpool feel Chelsea will budge on Colwill, they’re right to hold off on the pulling the trigger on someone else.

The young defender was described as being ‘fantastic’ by teammate Lewis O’Brien while on-loan at Huddersfield Town in 2021/22 [Yorkshire Live]. Since then Colwill has only improved again. It will be interesting to see just how big the Reds are willing to go on him, but by the sounds of it he’s the one they really want.
