Levi Colwill is reportedly a target for Liverpool having enjoyed a sensational year out on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion. Yet despite his Chelsea background, the centre-back has seemingly always been a Red at heart.

An interview with Goal back in 2021 has shed some light on Colwill’s appreciation for Liverpool, and more specifically to Steven Gerrard, who according to the player himself was his idol growing up and even had posters of the former Anfield captain.

With Liverpool on the hunt for a young centre-back this summer, Colwill has emerged as an obvious candidate for Jurgen Klopp’s side. However, the 20-year-old could be a hard player to recruit with Chelsea eager to keep hold of the defender for the new season.

Indeed, Colwill could be quite the signing for Liverpool. And the England youth international could be keen on a move if his previous comments on Gerrard are anything to go by. The centre-back said back in 2021: “Growing up, it was always Steven Gerrard who I loved seeing and how he used to lead.

“I was amazed by him and I used to have his pictures up in my room. I always used to copy him before training or even in matches. I would dress in the same boots as him. I looked up to him. I wasn’t a central midfielder, but I wanted his mentality.”

First idols are fundamental to a player becoming who they are later in life. And for Colwill, the defender’s admiration for Gerrard could realistically lead to a move to Liverpool if Chelsea decides to cash in on the 20-year-old later on this summer.

With Liverpool on the hunt for a young centre-back and Colwill in that rare category of defenders who is a natural left-footer, the English youngster could be a dream signing for the Reds, with the player himself likely to revel in the chance to play for the club his icon Gerrard captained for so many years.
