Liverpool shouldn’t yet be ruled out of the race to sign Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard this summer.
Pavard has been one of the more left-field names linked with a move to Anfield, as the Reds search for defensive reinforcements. He wouldn’t be many supporters’ first-choice, but it’s been claimed that talks have taken place with his agents nevertheless.
However, recent reports had suggested that the 27-year-old perhaps wasn’t so hot on the idea of joining Liverpool. Citing a potential lack of playing time, it appeared that Pavard would rather leave Bayern for elsewhere.

However, journalist Christian Falk has told CaughtOffside that this simply isn’t true. Although he gives no indication of where the Frenchman may end up, Falk insists that Pavard hasn’t turned anything down.
“It’s not true that Pavard has said ‘no’ to Liverpool, everything is open still,” Falk wrote yesterday. “Now they have to see where Pavard is going to.
“Bayern know they will lose Pavard.”
Pavard still open to Liverpool switch
Pavard may not have said no to a move to Liverpool, but we’d still be surprised to see it happen.
The Reds could certainly use someone of his versatility in defence, that much is true. They still need a back-up for Trent Alexander-Arnold and would be wise to add another centre-back, too. Pavard could do both.
Nevertheless, signings such as the Bayern man simply aren’t in Liverpool’s playbook.

At 27 he isn’t a veteran, but he’s no spring chicken, either. Having won the World Cup with France and everything with Bayern over the last four years, Pavard is as high-profile as they come. That isn’t Liverpool’s style.
As the imminent signing of Dominik Szoboszlai has shown though, the Reds can sometimes surprise you in the market.
Szoboszlai joining isn’t a shock in terms of the profile of the player, but the move came with little warning. Pavard would be the opposite kind of bombshell. There’s been plenty of smoke in this one, but he wouldn’t fit the usual mould for Liverpool.
As a result, we can’t say with certainty that the Reds won’t surprise us once more. But we won’t be holding our breath either.
