Liverpool are in contact with £34m defender’s agents, he’s interested in joining them

Liverpool have already been in contact with the agents of Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard.

The Reds have been linked with a move for Pavard as he prepares to leave Bayern this summer. And now, according to journalist Christian Falk for CaughtOffside, Liverpool have sounded his representatives out.

“Many clubs in England are interested in Pavard,” says Falk. “I think Pavard is a player who is looking at the project at [Manchester] City and sees what role he can play there. Barcelona still doesn’t have the money to compete with Premier League clubs.

“Liverpool and Pavard. They talked with the agents but have never been concrete with the club and that’s also the positions of the other clubs. There aren’t many clubs which are of interest to Pavard. There was and is Barca, there’s Liverpool, Chelsea, then if City are on the table, City too.”

It sounds like Pavard is interested then, but whether it goes any further will be solely down to Liverpool.

There will inevitably be those who disagree, but we’re still wholly in favour of Liverpool moving to sign Pavard this summer.

Reportedly available for around £34m, the 27-year-old would be an expert addition to the squad. His versatility and winning mentality would be useful to a group who are about to lose a couple of big personalities.

Perhaps it would be unfair to Pavard to label him a ‘James Milner replacement.’ The Frenchman is 10 years Milner’s junior after all.

But in some ways he could help plug the hole left by the Yorkshireman.

Every team needs a utility man, and although Pavard can’t play as many positions as Milner, he can still cover a few. With eyes on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s hybrid midfield role, the World Cup winner would be an able back-up.

He’d also possibly be the perfect man to play that right-sided centre-back role while Trent is tucking in. Not that we’re trying to push Ibrahima Konate out, not at all. If Jurgen Klopp is fancying a change of shape in certain games though, Konate’s countryman could be a useful Swiss Army Knife.

Pavard’s suitability for Liverpool has been played down in other quarters though, so we’ll just have to wait and see how it all comes out in the wash.
