Liverpool are going to be able to sign Dominik Szoboszlai for less than his £60m release clause.
The Reds have advanced their efforts to sign Szoboszlai today, with a move very much in the offing. And according to journalist Graeme Bailey, Liverpool could be about to get themselves an excellent deal.
“Szoboszlai has a release clause of £60 million,” Bailey told 90min’s Talking Transfers Podcast. “Obviously that isn’t going to be needed to be paid here. I’m hearing around £50 million, Liverpool can get this done. But a spectacular player, really good.

“I think he is a CAM [central attacking midfielder]. I like him. I think he’s up front in a three-man midfield. I think it’s far superior to Mount and Fernandes, personally.”
That sounds pretty good to us!
Liverpool work their magic again
In ordinary circumstances, you’d imagine there’d be no option but to pay Leipzig’s clause for their player.
But Liverpool don’t tend to move like an ordinary club in transfer negotiations. More often than not, they’re able to pull a rabbit out of the hat.
Whether it’s Michael Edwards, Julian Ward or now Jorg Schmadtke, the Reds’ sporting directors appear to have the Midas touch.

Of course, things with Leipzig could run smoother for Liverpool for a number of reasons. The Reds are reportedly trying to use the German side’s recent signing of Fabio Carvalho as leverage, for example.
They also have a very healthy relationship with them, having signed Ibrahima Konate and Naby Keita in the past. It often pays to cultivate these links. Especially with a club as prolific with player development as Leipzig.
So, what about the fee, then? Bailey suggests it’s a very good bit of business for Liverpool. If his sources end up being correct, then we’d probably have to agree.
Having pulled out of the race to sign Jude Bellingham, it was vital that the Reds spent money on the right players this summer. In Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, they may get two top young midfielders for around £85m. Plenty of room left for one or two more?
