Liverpool could now miss out on £34m defender over fears on playing time

Liverpool could reportedly miss out on the signing of Benjamin Pavard over fears on the player’s end that he will not be a regular for Jurgen Klopp.

Football Transfers claim that the French international is not fully sold on a move to Anfield due to a lack of guarantees that he will feature in the starting XI on a regular basis, with Pavard likely to be a backup option for Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Reportedly available for around £34m, Pavard has gained a reputation for himself as one of the most versatile defenders in Europe, with the centre-back appearing for Bayern Munich and France as both a central defender and as a right-back to fantastic results.

With Alexander-Arnold expected to migrate to midfield and centre-back depth needed at Liverpool, it’s no real wonder why the Reds are interested in signing Pavard. However, there is a real chance that the 27-year-old would spend most of his time on the bench, at least to begin with.

As a result, a move to Anfield could now be off the table for Pavard, who will seemingly want to join a club this summer where he will be a guaranteed starter and where he will feel valued in the XI, a criteria that Liverpool will fail based on early expectations.

Pavard is clearly done with Bayern, with Liverpool arguably the leading club for the defender’s signature this summer. Yet this latest update is a brave stance for the France international to take, especially when you consider that the 27-year-old would be a regular for the Reds.

As we know, Liverpool will be in the UEFA Europa League next season, putting major emphasis on squad rotation if Klopp is to challenge for the Premier League title. And for Pavard, this means that there will be many opportunities to play for the Anfield side, especially if defensive injuries begin to pile up.
