Rio Ferdinand says there’s no way £40m man will be sold, after Liverpool links

Chelsea won’t sanction the sale of reported Liverpool target Levi Colwill this summer.

That’s the view of former Manchester United Rio Ferdinand. The Reds have been linked with a move for Colwill after he put up an impressive season on-loan at Brighton.

And speaking on his FIVE podcast this week, Ferdinand said that the 20-year-old would be a ‘dream’ signing for Manchester United, too. However, the former England defender simply can’t see Chelsea letting Colwill go.

“If I could get him, my dream one [for Man United] would be Colwill, on-loan at Brighton from Chelsea,” said the pundit.

“But I think Chelsea are going to keep him. I think they’ve seen how good he is now.”

Chelsea set to keep hold of Colwill

For once, Ferdinand appears to be right on the money here. Despite links to the likes of Liverpool, it looks likely that Colwill will stay at Chelsea this summer.

The Blues look set to sell Kalidou Koulibaly after just a year in the Premier League. They do have other options in the position, but that should help Colwill’s path to the first team.

Having seen him do well at Brighton, they’ll probably feel he’s now ready to slot straight into the side.

That’s bad news for Liverpool, but it’s probably worse news for Brighton, who were more actively trying to sign the centre-back.

Having already seeing a £30m bid rejected, the Seagulls were reportedly ready to offer £40m to sign Colwill. That offer doesn’t yet appear to have reached Chelsea, but in all likelihood it’ll be knocked back anyway.

The Stamford Bridge club have been stung before when letting promising young players leave before their time. Allowing Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah to go ranks as perhaps the two biggest miscalculations in Premier League history. They’re seemingly determined not to add Colwill’s name to that list.

So, while Rio and Liverpool may be dreaming of snatching the youngster this summer, that doesn’t look like becoming reality any time soon.
