Liverpool are reportedly monitoring Levi Colwill’s situation at Chelsea as Brighton & Hove Albion prepare to make a £40m bid for the 20-year-old defender.
According to the Evening Standard, the Seagulls are readying a club-record offer to sign the English talent, who this week has been drafted into Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions set-up after an incredible year out on loan in the Premier League with Brighton.
Lauded as ‘fantastic’ by former Huddersfield Town teammate Lewis O’Brien, Colwill is on his way to becoming one of the best prospects in England, and for Liverpool, news of Brighton making a £40m offer will be unwelcomed at Anfield this week.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are keen to sign a young central defender this summer, and Colwill is arguably the perfect candidate for the role based on his form for Brighton last season as well as his homegrown status. The Chelsea centre-back is also a natural left-footer.
Indeed, Brighton making a £40m bid might not be enough to break Chelsea’s resolve. But such an offer will strike fear into Liverpool, who know that they can’t afford to lose ground in a race for Colwill so early in the summer transfer window.
Brighton could realistically beat Liverpool to Colwill
Having spent a year out on loan on the south coast, Brighton are naturally a favourite to land Colwill this summer, especially with the Seagulls competing in Europe next season as Chelsea prepare for another year of potential turmoil. And for Liverpool, they could soon lose the race for the defender.
As we know, Brighton will offer Colwill regular first-team football as well as minutes in the UEFA Europa League, meaning Liverpool could have few cards to deal in their bid to persuade the Chelsea man to swap Stamford Bridge for Anfield this summer.
