England manager Gareth Southgate has admitted that he’s liked what he’s seen from reported Liverpool target Levi Colwill.
Colwill was called up to train with the Three Lions senior squad last week, replacing the injured Lewis Dunk. He has travelled with the team to Malta, who England play tonight. And speaking in his pre-match press conference via BeanymanSports, Southgate raved about the centre-back.
“He’s done really well, he’s settled in very, very well with the group,” said the 52-year-old. “We know he’s a good player already, he’s young. We’re impressed with his mentality, have been all season, and his ability.”
Liverpool keeping an eye on Colwill
Southgate’s praise of Colwill comes after Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson issued similar rave reviews earlier this week. The young man is slowly building his reputation.
Understandably, this has reportedly caught the attention of Liverpool.
The Reds are claimed to be ‘monitoring’ Colwill’s situation as Brighton weigh up a £40m bid. Having spent a very successful year on-loan with the Seagulls, they’re now pushing to sign the defender permanently.

They’ve already had a £30m bid rejected and are claimed to be ready to up that to £40m in the coming days.
Parent club Chelsea seemingly don’t want to sell Colwill, but if he does leave, it looks more than likely that it’ll be to join Brighton. The fact that the West Londoners are set to sign Moises Caicedo from the Amex only reinforces that belief. Relations between the two clubs appear to be good.
Still, Liverpool look to be just about in there for Colwill. Although he seems to have enjoyed himself at Brighton, the chance of a move to Anfield would surely trump a return to the South Coast.
If the £40m fee is considered by Chelsea, maybe it’s worth Liverpool throwing their hat in, too. The young centre-back could be going to the top. Southgate seems to think so, and we do too. This is still one to keep an eye on.
