Ajax defender Jurrien Timber is not an active transfer target for Liverpool at the moment.

Timber has been linked with a move to Anfield as he prepares to leave the Dutch giants this summer. But according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Reds have other targets ahead of the 21-year-old.

“At the moment I heard of different names they like so, at the moment, it’s not something concrete for Liverpool,” Romano told CaughtOffside.

“We know they’re looking for a centre-back. I think honestly, they will go for a left-footed centre-back in case they will find an opportunity, but this is still very early stages.

“So we have to see what kind of opportunities there will be. We know their focus is on the midfield and importantly how much would be the asking price because yes, today Timber spoke and said he still doesn’t know what kind of future he will have at Ajax. But it’s also true that he’s under contract for two more years until summer 2025.”

Liverpool not targeting Timber

Timber has been strangely vocal about his prospects of leaving Ajax this summer. It was only yesterday that the Netherlands international was once again talking publicly about his future.

With the window now set to officially open tomorrow, he looks to be readily on the market.

From a Liverpool point of view Timber would seem to fit in relatively well. Capable of playing at centre-back, right-back or even in midfield, he’s got the versatility that Jurgen Klopp looks for in a player.

The Ajax man’s skill-set could also be suited to stepping in for Trent Alexander-Arnold in his new hybrid midfield role.

But, although he only has two years left on his deal right now, a price-tag of around £44m has been mooted for Timber. As Romano alludes to, that’s likely to be too much for Liverpool right now.

They’re currently focusing on sufficiently boosting their midfield for the new season. Consequently, you feel a defender will only be brought in if the right player becomes available at the right price.

To all intents and purposes, it looks like Timber isn’t the focus of that for the time being. As we know in this market though, things can change quickly. We wouldn’t rule this out completely just yet.
