‘Left the race’: Romano certain Liverpool won’t sign Bundesliga star, have two other targets

Liverpool have ‘left the race’ for Konrad Laimer, says Fabrizio Romano. He does believe the Reds have two other targets, however.

Fabrizio Romano gave an update on midfielders this week, with plenty of discussion around Liverpool. It featured talk on Konrad Laimer – a player the Reds have apparently given up on.

“An update on Liverpool – they have left the race for Konrad Laimer,” he told his YouTube channel. “The midfielder of RB Leipzig, he on the list last summer before the signing of Arthur Melo but there was no time to complete the agreement with Leipzig.

“They decided to keep the player and nothing will happen with Liverpool or English clubs in January. Why? Because there’s an agreement already with Bayern [Munich]. Konrad Laimer, 99 per cent chance, will be a Bayern player in January.”

But he does have better news. Romano believes Liverpool are comfortably in the running for Jude Bellingham, while also naming them as a potential destination for Enzo Fernández. The Reds have grand plans – but Laimer is no longer in them.

We can’t help but be quite disappointed about this. Laimer would have been a magnificent signing on a free transfer and in doing so, Liverpool could have built a dream midfield.

After all, a player like Jude Bellingham costs a fortune. What better way to build around him than free transfers? And Laimer would have been a particularly great one.

He’s arguably the best pressing-midfielder in Europe, for one. Having that kind of player alongside Bellingham is perfect and suggestions are that Liverpool do want such a signing.

It looks more likely to be Sofyan Amrabat now, though. Liverpool may have had a chance to sign Laimer if they’d acted quicker in the summer, as Romano says. As it is, they’ll now focus elsewhere.
