Curtis Jones is under contract at Liverpool until the end of June 2027, but he could end up leaving this summer.
Inter Milan have been linked for a while after the midfielder failed to hold down a starting berth under Arne Slot last season.
It has now emerged this week that more clubs have joined the race for Jones, and many Liverpool fans think it is time for the player to move on.
What has been holding Alexis Mac Allister back at Liverpool recently?
Maybe Andoni Iraola can get more out of him 🤔
Liverpool fans in favour of Curtis Jones being sold
In response to suggestions the transfer race is heating up, a number of supporters questioned Jones’ ability, including calling him ‘bang average’.
It was also pointed out that he has now failed to become a regular starter under two different managers, with the smart money instead on selling the Englishman this summer and finding a suitable replacement, rather than letting him leave for free next year.
Just some of the discussion around Jones’ future can be seen below:
- “No one is bigger than the club, why are you all acting like it would be a favour if he stays? Has not cemented a spot as a starter under Klopp or Slot, and probably won’t with Iraola either. Keep Harvey, sell Jones.”
- “He can go mate; he is bang average. Why should he stay? Why?”
- “Get him gone and take the money. So obvious he won’t sign a new deal if he stays, just can’t let him go for free, not sure why quite a few are begging him to stay and blaming the club when he clearly wants to go”
- “Hopefully he leaves so that we can buy a proper defensive midfielder with his fee”
- “Let’s be honest here, the writing is on the wall for Jones; he will be gone, and imo that’s probably why we will get a midfielder in”
- “Can we just get him gone and then go get a proper 6?”
- “He’s not worth all this trouble; clearly doesn’t want to extend”
- “Bidding war, get 35m, add 15 or 20 on them and get Kone, get Wharton for 80, get Mbaye for RW and Barcola for LW, any decent RB”
- “Let him go, reinvest well classic LFC rebuild play”
- “I think it’s clear he doesn’t want to stay, so just sell and get Kone”
Which midfielders are Liverpool trying to sign?
If Jones does go, that will leave Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai as the only regular starters left in midfield.
Reinforcements are needed regardless of what happens to the academy talent, though, and several names are already being mooted.
Liverpool can buy Manu Kone for €60m, but there are concerns about the AS Roma midfielder’s injury record.
Joao Gomes is another option, and he had already expressed his love for the Reds and former manager Jurgen Klopp.
We also know that Adam Wharton and Alex Scott are of interest, but both may be on the pricier side.
