Liverpool are reportedly stepping up their interest in Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes as they look to break the deadlock of their summer window.
Reds fans are growing frustrated over a lack of action in the transfer market despite so many areas of Andoni Iraola’s squad needing to be addressed and improved.
Midfield is certainly one of those areas, and reports from Brazil that Liverpool have made contact with Wolves over Gomes will come as good news to supporters.
How high should Liverpool go to sign Bradley Barcola from PSG?
Maybe Liverpool would be better off signing two or three €50m players…
It should be a positive development for the player himself too. Gomes has made no secret of his admiration for Liverpool, and even publicly supported the Reds during a Champions League campaign under Jurgen Klopp in 2020.
Gomes loved watching Liverpool under Klopp
Ironically, given he was all set to join Atletico Madrid this summer before the move broke down, Gomes sent some posts on X (then Twitter) during Liverpool’s infamous match against Diego Simeone’s team in the last-16 of the Champions League in March 2020.
“Look at the intensity with which Liverpool plays, man, that’s surreal !! What a team,” the then 19-year-old posted in Portuguese.
Later that evening, with the Reds having been dramatically knocked out by Atletico at Anfield, Gomes shared his dismay that Klopp’s side had not progressed.

“I really wanted Liverpool to advance with the kind of football they displayed,” he said.
These were not Gomes’ first posts about Liverpool either. The Brazil international must have been watching the Reds beat Manchester United at Anfield when he tweeted ‘My God Liverpool,’ with a flame emoji and some applauding hands in January 2020.
Two years later, Gomes admitted that he would like to play for Liverpool, with the 25-year-old seemingly holding a genuine love for the Reds.
With Man United also said to be keen on plucking him from Wolves this summer, this could be crucial in helping Liverpool get a deal over the line.
