Liverpool fans have some interesting takes about why Xabi Alonso shouldn’t replace Arne Slot

There has been a lot of talk about Liverpool replacing Arne Slot following their recent struggles.

An interim manager stepping up at Anfield can’t be ruled out, it has been suggested.

But given how FSG operate, the most likely outcome, and what has been reported, is that Slot will leave Liverpool at the end of the 2025/26 season.

As expected, this has led to links to former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, who is now out of work after leaving his role at Real Madrid.

Liverpool fans question Xabi Alonso

Alonso won the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen but struggled to get a tune out of the Madrid squad.

Now, using Rousing The Kop’s TalkingPoints platform, we asked fans if Xabi will be the man in charge at Anfield come 2026/27.

Some were all for the ex-player making a return, but a number have expressed why they don’t want Alonso as Liverpool’s next manager.

One fan wrote: “Even if Slot is sacked i wouldn’t want him to manage Liverpool. He is actually not that great of a coach or manager. If he’s good or capable, he’ll still be in Real Madrid.”

Another suggested: “Of course Alonso is happy to be considered for the job. No thanks, we are nobodies second choice. If he can’t do it at Real Madrid, what gives you the confidence he can do it in a tougher league?”

A third echoed: “Why Alonso? He had the chance to come before Slot. But chose Real. What does that say.”

This prompted another to reply: “He chose to stay at Leverkusen technically.”

“Not sure, I think he needs a bit longer in management before Liverpool. Maybe come as assistant manager, as I would hate for him to fail, as I really like him as a manager,” a fifth stated.

While a sixth even mooted the possibility of Alonso moving to Manchester City: “Got a nasty feeling he’ll head to City. I really can’t see us sacking Slot unless something drastically bad happens, which I don’t think it will. If Xabi holds off over the summer, he might get the gig in the autumn.”

What Xabi Alonso said about turning Liverpool down

As some fans have alluded to, Alonso turned down Liverpool back in 2024 when he was still Bayer Leverkusen manager.

The Reds were eyeing a replacement for Jurgen Klopp and eventually settled on Slot.

Alonso explained his decision in June of that year. He said: “All these decisions, they need to be thorough. You need to really think about them. And it was more about what I had, not what I’m missing.

“For sure, my bond with Liverpool is there and it’s still there. So there’s no, any kind of issue with that.”
