With every stumble Liverpool take under Arne Slot, the push for Xabi Alonso to return gets stronger.
It’s not a fun time at Anfield right now.
Slot’s Liverpool struggles aren’t going away, and the discontent amongst fans continues to grow.
What does Arne Slot have to do to still be at Liverpool next season?
Ever since Alonso left Real Madrid, he has been the main contender to take over from the Dutchman. Rumours have swirled ever since, and the going theory is that he would love to take the reins.
A theory now confirmed by the Spaniard’s own camp.
Sources close to Xabi Alonso share his stance on joining Liverpool
Alonso was adored at Liverpool during his playing days, and he would be an extremely popular hire should FSG pull the trigger on a managerial change.
Reports from Spain claimed the 44-year-old is open to the idea of a return to the Premier League. Now, the English media is relaying the same, this time from sources close to the former midfielder.
Alan Irwin tells Sky Sports: “Xabi Alonso’s name is constantly mentioned in these parts and sources close to him indicate he would be more than happy with a return to the club where he was adored by fans during his playing career here.”
If a new manager is deemed the direction of travel, it sounds like Liverpool already have their man.
Will Xabi Alonso be Liverpool manager by the start of the 2026/27 season?
If no, where will he be instead?
There haven’t been any concrete signs of a change in attitude from the club’s hierarchy, who have repeated their willingness to give Slot until the end of the season.
But football is a results business, and if this dire form in the league continues, they may well go back on their decision.
Arne Slot will be aware of the pressure coming on him
Slot is a relaxed character who doesn’t often let emotions get the better of him.
As nonchalant as he may well be, the noise around his future is becoming impossible to ignore.

Much of the team’s struggles can be attributed to him, but the players aren’t exactly blowing us away either. It will be telling how they respond in the coming weeks.
Until now, they appear to be behind the manager, but who knows what will happen if Liverpool can’t get back to winning ways. They may look at the interested Alonso as a more promising option.
