Liverpool’s hunt for a new defender has been marked by disappointment so far this month.
After making an offer for the player back in the summer, it has now been reported that Marc Guehi is joining Manchester City in a £20m deal.
Meanwhile, after being extensively scouted by Liverpool this season, Chelsea are now looking at Jeremy Jacquet.
Who should be Liverpool’s top centre-back target after missing out on Marc Guehi?
The Reds’ potential centre-back signings list is dwindling, with some of their Premier League rivals seemingly more keen to make moves this month.
But now, as fans watch other teams move for their transfer targets, Liverpool could end up doing the same to Bayern Munich.
Liverpool could sign Nico Schlotterbeck ahead of Bayern Munich
Liverpool were first linked with Nico Schlotterbeck back in October 2025.
Schlotterbeck wants to win titles in Germany and is due to become a free agent at the end of this season.
In turn, a potential move to Bayern Munich over the Reds this summer would have made a lot of sense.
However, as per CfBayernInsider, Christian Falk has said that Bayern Munich aren’t an option for the stopper at this time.
He said: “So we have to keep an eye on England and the Premier League and wait and see what the clubs there are planning on doing.
“The Germany international said he wants to win titles and silverware, but I don’t think it’s possible with Borussia Dortmund at the moment.
“If he wants to win titles – he probably needs a transfer! But Bayern, I’m afraid, aren’t an option at this point in time.”
Crucially, the report goes on to add that ‘Bayern need to be prepared for the very real possibility that the Reds [Liverpool] may look to snatch Schlotterbeck out from right under their noses’.
How will Liverpool turn things around if they fail to get Champions League football in 25/26?
How Liverpool could use Nico Schlotterbeck
If Liverpool were to end up signing the German international, he would offer something none of the Reds’ experienced centre-backs currently do.
He is a natural left-footer, which would allow him to start next to Milos Kerkez and Virgil van Dijk to play as a right-sided centre-back every week.
Furthermore, Schlotterbeck’s ball-playing skills have previously been praised by Dietmar Hamann, who said the player is ‘one of the best’ in Europe on that front.
As per Sky Sports, he stated: “Schlotterbeck still has the odd mistake or two too many in his game, but he’s currently keeping Niklas Süle out of the team and left-footed central defenders like him are something you look for all over the world.
”He is a great player, very good in tackling and strong in heading. He’s probably one of the best centre-backs in terms of ball-playing skills, not just in Germany, but in all of Europe. I really hope he can finally take the next step now.”
