Mohamed Salah has now left Liverpool for the AFCON, and while he did return against Brighton, his future remains up in the air.

Salah played well against the Seagulls, providing an assist for Hugo Ekitike’s second of the day.

Some fans may now be hoping that the Leeds United incident is behind us, and once he is back from international duty, normal service will resume.

However, Salah is still being linked with a 2026 exit, potentially to the United States over Saudi Arabia.

Now, a new update on what is going to happen with the 33-year-old’s agent and the club has been shared.

Mohamed Salah’s agent and Richard Hughes set for talks

Speaking on the Walk On podcast, James Pearce confirmed Salah’s agent is going to meet Liverpool chief Richard Hughes in the coming days.

He said: “Well, Arne Slot insisted after Salah’s game that his phrase was that there is no issue to resolve and that it’s now just back to being business as usual. I think I’m not quite kind of along with that.

“I think my understanding is that there’s going to be more discussions between Liverpool Sporting Director Richard Hughes and Rami Abbas, Salah’s representative, over the coming days and weeks to try and, you know, to thrash out what the future is going to look like once Mo returns from AFCON because despite the kind of truce being called, with him being back in the squad and performing well for Liverpool on Saturday, it doesn’t change the fact that there’s an issue there.

“That Salah can’t handle and doesn’t want to deal with being a substitute because he thinks he should be starting games, and Slot doesn’t currently regard Salah as part of his best team.”

Concerning news for Liverpool fans, perhaps, and it does likely mean his long-term future will continue to be called into question once the January transfer window opens.

However, there may be a potential issue with the Egyptian securing a move this winter.

Why Saudi Pro League might not be the favourites for Mohamed Salah

Should Salah be unhappy with his newfound role in the team and push for a move, his transfer options could be limited.

A move to Italy has been quashed after rumours of talks with his agent.

Bayern Munich won’t sign Salah, as confirmed by their director of sport, while FC Barcelona can’t afford the Liverpool winger.

That likely leaves Saudi Arabia and potentially the MLS as possible destinations for the forward.

However, Saudi clubs could face a stumbling block when trying to sign Salah from Liverpool.

As Ben Jacobs shared: “Can also reveal if Saudi clubs are to make an approach, no new funding for January will be provided by the Player Acquisition Centre of Excellence (PACE).

“The seasonal budget is already allocated, and Saudi clubs, for Salah or any other star in January, must find a means to fund a transfer without relying on new central funding.”
