It has been claimed this week that Xabi Alonso is open to becoming Liverpool manager, should his former side come calling.

The Spaniard is currently at Real Madrid, but the same report suggested his future with Los Blancos is not certain.
Alonso has won 17 of his opening 23 matches with Real and is now working alongside former Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold.
And previous comments from the full-back show that Trent thinks the former midfielder is a top manager.
Speaking back in June to The Athletic, he showed his admiration for Alonso, saying: “Obviously the way he can adapt to different teams [is impressive]. We changed the system in a short space of time [for today] and the way he gets his messages across means it’s very clear and we can understand perfectly what we need to do as individuals and as a team.
“When he joins in in training, you can see he’s still got high, high quality, which is amazing. I grew up watching him, and he’s not lost any quality at all.
“He could still lace them up and get out there with us if he wanted to, he’s still that good.”

While it remains to be seen if the German would be open to a return, he has, like Trent, praised Alonso previously.
In February 2024, as per TNT Sports, Klopp said: “Xabi is doing an incredible job.
“[He is a] former world-class player, from a coaching family as well which helps a little, he was like a coach already when he was playing.
“The football he is playing, the teams he sets up, the transfers he did, it is absolutely exceptional.”
