Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has Real Madrid sitting top of La Liga, but his future is still being questioned.

After Jurgen Klopp left, there were suggestions that Alonso could join Liverpool as their new head coach.

Instead, the Spaniard remained at Bayer Leverkusen before eventually joining Real Madrid ahead of 2025/26.

Now, journalist Jorge Picon has stated that ‘Alonso’s situation is becoming untenable’ at Real, and several players want a change.

Meanwhile, another update from Indykaila News claims ‘Alonso is ready to step into the Anfield hot seat if Liverpool comes calling.’

Liverpool fans comment on Xabi Alonso becoming manager

Following their ex-midfielder being mooted for an Anfield return, Reds fans have flooded social media to share their verdicts.

One fan wrote: “Bro, he will be the perfect replacement as he will be able to unlock the true capabilities of Florian Wirtz again and will build the team around him!”

“Just sack Xabi Alonso, man. I want to enjoy him with the current Liverpool team,” added another.

A third stated: “Oh go on then…….although surely he’d just talk into Liverpool wouldn’t he? Can’t see Slot hanging around if Alonso becomes available.”

“This is really huge. I wouldn’t look past him right now, honestly. He is actually doing a brilliant job at Madrid,” claimed a fourth.

A fifth tweeted: “With Wirtz and Frimpong in Liverpool, I hope Alonso decides to come to Anfield. He would probably feel at home.”

A sixth wrote: “I like Alonso to be honest, and I’d love to see him manage Liverpool and be a success.”

And another Liverpool fan added: “Xabi Alonso to be Liverpool manager will be very good, he made the miracle at Istanbul with Liverpool in the Champions League 2005 year. He is a Liverpool legend.”

Xabi Alonso’s record as Real Madrid manager

Whether or not Madrid decide to part ways with the former Liverpool man remains to be seen, but it’s certainly a development to keep an eye on over the coming weeks as talk of Arne Slot leaving continues.

While he’s not had a perfect start with Real, his managerial record is by no means terrible.

Alonso has taken charge of 23 matches, won 17, drawn three and lost three, with one of those defeats coming against Liverpool.

Madrid average 2.04 goals scored with the Spaniard in the dugout, conceding 0.94 per 90.
