Liverpool trio dubbed ‘superb’ despite what they did against Crystal Palace on Wednesday

Liverpool were beaten 3-0 by Crystal Palace on Wednesday evening in a game that they should’ve been looking to win.

However, before the game had even kicked off, it was clear that the Reds weren’t going for the win as most of Arne Slot’s starting XI were from their Under-21s.

There were a few decent appearances from players as the game went on, but in the end, the Reds’ youngsters were no match for a full-strength Crystal Palace side.

As mentioned, however, some players who featured against the Eagles did actually do well and up until the 40th minute of the game, the tie was fairly even.

In fact, Stephen Warnock even said that three of the Reds’ players were “superb” before Palace’s first goal went in.

Liverpool tried out yet another new formation against Palace on Wednesday, and although Slot may have thought it would help make them more solid, this wasn’t the game to test it out on.

If Liverpool had five senior centre-backs among their ranks, there would be no reason for them not to try it out.

However, with the club only having three fit senior centre-backs available to them at the moment, it feels like a bit of a risk to play with three at the back.

Despite this, Slot chose to try it out with Warnock being left impressed by the performance that Wataru Endo, Joe Gomez, and Andy Robertson all put in during the first 40 minutes of the tie.

“The back three of Liverpool have been superb, so far, but it is Joe Gomez’s error,” he said in quotes relayed by BBC Sport.

“It falls to Ismaila Sarr and he rifles it in. It is a great finish.”

Liverpool must get back to winning ways before it’s too late

October has been a terrible month for Liverpool, with the Reds losing the most games out of any team in Europe’s top five leagues since September 27th.

Despite nothing going right for the Reds at the moment, the fact that Slot is still trying to resolve the issues presented to him is a good sign.

There’s no denying that Liverpool have plenty of world-class quality among their ranks at the moment, but with the way things are headed, they could end the season without any silverware to their name.

Blips are, of course, expected to happen in football, but the fact that things haven’t got any better over the last month or so is starting to become a concern.

If Slot doesn’t figure out how to get Liverpool firing again, the Reds’ season could be over before 2026 even comes.
