Liverpool will have their eye on the free agent market in 2026 as they aim to finally sort out their problems in central defence.
Both Dayot Upamecano and Marc Guehi are due to see their contracts expire at Bayern Munich and Crystal Palace respectively, and the Reds have been linked with moves for both.
With high profile free transfers becoming more and more commonplace in the game today, though, perhaps there are some more opportunities for Liverpool.
As well as the defence, Arne Slot may be looking to shore up his midfield during the summer of 2026.
The Liverpool squad could arguably do with another midfielder who can come in and keep the level high when the likes of Ryan Gravenberch or Alexis Mac Allister are not available.
The Reds may look to spend big in this area when the time comes, but if they are clever about it, they could secure an astute free signing in Feyenoord’s Quinten Timber.

Liverpool should look at Quinten Timber signing
As RTK reported recently, Liverpool are eyeing a potential move for Eduardo Camavinga next summer.
The likes of Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba are also understood to be on Liverpool’s radar, but all three players would have to come in as instant starters given the price they would command.

Given they already have Gravenberch, Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, as well as Florian Wirtz, Curtis Jones and young talents like Stefan Bajcetic and Trey Nyoni, the Reds do not necessarily need another starter.
What they could do with is someone like Timber, who is happy to play a more rotational role while also keeping quality high.
At 24, Timber is still yet to reach his peak, and having played a key role in Slot’s league and cup-winning Feyenoord side, the Dutchman knows exactly what the Liverpool boss requires.
It is rare to sign a player so young with such experience for nothing. Poaching Timber could give Slot the multi-functional back-up he needs without spending a penny in the market.
Which other free signings are available?
Looking across players who are out of contract at the end of the season, Timber is the one who Liverpool fans should really keep at least half an eye on – Upamecano and Guehi aside.
However, there are a couple more interesting possibilities should the Reds decide to save their cash.
| Name | Current Team | Age | Position |
| Quinten Timber | Feyenoord | 24 | CM |
| Eric Garcia | Barcelona | 24 | CB |
| Marc Guehi | Crystal Palace | 25 | CB |
| Dayot Upamecano | Bayern Munich | 26 | CB |
| Ryan Sessegnon | Fulham | 25 | LB |
| Dusan Vlahovic | Juventus | 25 | ST |
| Ruben Neves | Al Hilal | 28 | CM |
Left-back has been a problem for the Reds so far this season, and with Andy Robertson out of contract himself in 2026, Slot may be on the lookout for another new solution.
Liverpool could do far worse than look to Ryan Sessegnon, who could provide a Jeremie Frimpong-esque solution both at full-back and in a more advanced position.
Another who may be worth monitoring is Barcelona centre-back Eric Garcia. Still only 24, the former Man City man is also out of contract and could be a depth option to a position in need of attention at Anfield.
All of these players could of course sign contracts to remain at their respective clubs, but if no agreements are forthcoming, the likes of Timber, Garcia and Sessegnon could find themselves being chased by Liverpool.
