Ryan Gravenberch has been one of Liverpool’s best players since the start of last season.
The Dutchman found a new level to his game after Arne Slot took over from Jurgen Klopp, with the former Bayern Munich man becoming one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League.
The 2025-26 season has been full of immense performances from the midfielder, and if he continues on this path, he could become one of Liverpool’s most important players sooner than many think.

However, even though he starts off as a number six, fans have noticed that he’s been pushing forward more over the last few weeks, with the 23-year-old now admitting that this is no accident.
Arne Slot has given Liverpool’s midfielders more freedom in their positions this term
One of the main things that Liverpool’s players did during games last season was keep their positions.
In fact, there were even times when it felt like the Reds were a bit too rigid.
However, after opposing managers figured out how to counter Slot’s tactic, the Dutchman has since changed his ways and has come back with a bang in the 2025-26 campaign.
This has been made clear by the fact that Liverpool have earned 15 points in the Premier League thus far, with the Anfield outfit winning all but one of their games across all competitions.
And, while speaking about his performance to TNT Sports, Gravenberch lauded Slot for the changes he’s made that have allowed the midfielder to play more freely.
“The coach has given me the confidence, this season we have more freedom in the midfield, last season I was just like only on the six, deep, and now I can go more forward, like you see today,” he said.
“I think my strength is also there, so I’m happy with that, and I’m also happy with my goal.”
Rio Ferdinand was left awestruck by Ryan Gravenberch’s goal for Liverpool
Going into the game, many expected Liverpool to cruise to a win.
Indeed, their Premier League record up until derby day was perfect, and if they did end up losing against Everton, they’d have never lived it down.
Of course, there were a couple of moments throughout the clash when it felt like the Toffees were going to come out on top, but fortunately, that wasn’t the case.
Gravenberch opened the scoring against Everton with one of the best strikes that Liverpool have scored all season.
The ball came in from behind Gravenberch after Mohamed Salah played an inch-perfect pass to the midfielder.
He then glanced at the ball, saw it was getting away from him and struck it at the perfect angle to get it past Jordan Pickford to send Liverpool 1-0 up.
And, taking to his personal X account, Rio Ferdinand shared his instant reaction to the goal.
“Gravenberch some player,” he wrote.
It’s clear that Liverpool are going to be the team to beat this season, but if they can’t manage to keep hold of their leads as they get into the latter stages of their games, they might not be as lucky.
This would be far from ideal. That is, especially since Liverpool have spent over £400million this summer bringing players such as Alexander Isak through the Anfield doors.
