Liverpool managed to beat Everton 2-1 in their first Merseyside derby of the season on Saturday.

The two clubs went into the game in fine form, with David Moyes and Arne Slot gearing their teams up for an all-out war.

However, when the game kicked off, it was clear that Liverpool were going to be the dominant team throughout the clash, even if they did get a bit lazy towards the end of the first half.

And, even though they were already winning 2-0 going into the second half of the game, the fact that they had both Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz ready to come in off the bench is proof of how strong the Reds’ depth actually is.

However, it was a moment from Dominik Szoboszlai before Hugo Ekitike scored Liverpool’s second goal of the day that caught the eye of Ally McCoist.

Dominik Szoboszlai’s two-yard pass helped set Hugo Ekitike up for his goal

Although most of the hard work for Liverpool’s second goal of the game was done by Ekitike, without Szoboszlai’s initial pass to Alexis Mac Allister, who then passed it to Ryan Gravenberch, the move wouldn’t have even started.

The Hungarian has been another player who’s been one of Slot’s best this season despite spending most of it as the Anfield outfit’s right-back.

And, even though he didn’t get the assist for Ekitike’s strike, without him, the Reds would have gone into the second half only one goal up.

While live on TNT Sports, McCoist spoke about Szoboszlai’s contribution and lauded him for his performance.

“That was a great finish [from Ekitike],” McCoist said.

“But, there’s a ball right at the start of the process, maybe a two-yard pass from Szoboszlai on the outside of his right foot, that’s brilliant.

“It’s a great goal, lovely, [Szoboszlai’s pass] just creates a little bit of space.”

Liverpool must find a way to keep all of their players happy this season

It’s now clear that Liverpool have some of the best squad depth in the Premier League.

Indeed, they could do with another defender or two to ensure that they’re covered for injuries, but when looking at Liverpool’s midfield and attack, no other team is close to the quality they possess.

The fact that Wirtz and Isak were just ready and waiting to come into the game from the bench is something that the Reds’ fans never thought would happen.

At the moment, they’re still on top of the Premier League table, but since they did concede at the start of the second half, it’s clear that Slot still has some work to do regarding Liverpool keeping their lead in games.
