Liverpool sold a massive chunk of their squad over the course of the summer transfer window.
Players such as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Harvey Elliott have been moved on, with others such as Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz getting brought in to plug the gaps.
The 2025-26 summer transfer window was one full of rather expensive changes, with over £400million being spent on their new recruits.
Indeed, a large chunk of the £400million spent was written off by the sales of their first-team squad, but there was still one player who the Reds didn’t quite manage to sign.
Marc Guehi was Arne Slot’s only transfer target that he missed out on this summer, with Crystal Palace pulling the plug on the deal at the final hour.

That is, despite the Eagles allowing their captain to undergo a medical with the Premier League champions.
Joe Gomez is surely going to be sold by Liverpool in the January transfer window
Although Elliott’s exit was the only one that occurred on deadline day, Joe Gomez almost followed him through the exit doors.
AC Milan made a £13million bid for the centre-back and, even though Slot was willing to let him go, they didn’t want to sanction his sale without guaranteeing that Guehi was going to join.
And, fortunately for Liverpool, their gamble paid off as, in the end, Guehi stayed put.
However, as per a fresh update from journalist David Lynch via the Sports Mole YouTube channel, it feels like change could still be afoot when the January transfer window comes around.
“Liverpool were wanting to sign Marc Guehi, but they were willing to let Joe Gomez go,” he said.
“They want four centre-halves, that’s how they’re going to approach this, they’ve got two either side in terms of their full-backs as well, so they’re absolutely covered there.
“The one question mark you could have is Joe Gomez’s fitness, maybe Konate gets an injury, but those concerns have existed for a while.”
Liverpool must choose between Marc Guehi and Joe Gomez in January
Seeing as though Liverpool only play with two centre-backs in their starting XI, there’s no need for them to have five centre-backs among their ranks.
Indeed, Giovanni Leoni is still a tad young to be a regular starter, but if Liverpool want him to develop into an even better player, he’ll need to play the odd game here and there.
However, if the Reds signed Guehi and kept Gomez this summer, there would’ve been little to no chance of the Italian breaking into Slot’s starting XI.
Granted, Guehi is rather versatile and can be used anywhere across the back four, but since Liverpool also have two full-backs on either side, there’s not much chance of Gomez getting used there either.

This is why, when January comes around, Liverpool will have a fair few decisions to make regarding their players.
It also feels likely that the choices Slot ends up making will have a lot to do with the first half of the 2025-26 season, so if Gomez wants to stick around and prove his worth, he needs to avoid injury as much as possible.
