Liverpool are advancing in their plans for the summer transfer window as they prepare to defend their Premier League title in 2025/26.

The Reds are set for a big few months in the market, with a number of moves slated to happen.

Things have started early at Anfield, news emerging on Thursday that Liverpool are closing in on signing Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen.

Frimpong looks likely to arrive over the coming weeks as the Reds look to plug the hole left by Trent Alexander-Arnold.

As well as the Dutchman, Liverpool have been looking into a move for Leverkusen teammate Florian Wirtz. Liverpool have been in contact with Wirtz over a move to Merseyside.

As the Reds await an answer from the German, previous comments from Frimpong have emerged to suggest he would welcome Wirtz to Anfield with open arms.

Jeremie Frimpong is good friends with Florian Wirtz

While Frimpong is an exciting potential signing for Liverpool, Wirtz is the one who has captured the imagination of supporters.

The 22-year-old has been one of Europe’s most highly-rated young forwards for years now and would represent a real statement of intent from the Reds ahead of a title defence.

Having played with Wirtz since 2021, Frimpong is clearly aware of how good a player the German is. But as he revealed to Spanish outlet Relevo in 2023, Liverpool’s new signing-in-waiting is also a big fan of Wirtz on a personal level.

“On a day-to-day basis, he is exactly what you see on the pitch,” Frimpong said of his teammate.

“He is impressive. He plays as if he has been here for 10 years. He is intelligent.

“He is also a great person,” added the right-back. “He was the first one who looked after me when I arrived at the club: he was my first friend!

“Flo asked me about Celtic, invited me to his house, we went out for dinner. He did things to make me feel at home.”

Could Frimpong help Liverpool land Wirtz?

With Bayern Munich, Man City and Liverpool all vying for Wirtz’s signature, perhaps the Reds bringing Frimpong in could work in their favour here.

Given he is a German international, Wirtz will also have plenty of friends at Bayern Munich. But there have been suggestions that Leverkusen are especially reluctant to sell their star man to their Bundesliga rivals.

Although they haven’t had to deal with Leverkusen directly while attempting to sign Frimpong, Liverpool are classy operators and will have been keeping the German club informed throughout their conversations with the player.

As a result, relations are likely to be good between the two teams. This could certainly help Liverpool when it comes to Wirtz.

Clearly, Frimpong’s impending presence at Liverpool could also be a small reason for Wirtz to opt for Anfield this summer. The two are clearly fond of each other, perhaps that can continue in new pastures next term.
