Trent Alexander-Arnold’s replacement was obvious due to these key stats but Liverpool let him slip away

The Liverpool career of Trent Alexander-Arnold is coming to an end.

Having spent the last nine years with the Merseyside club, Alexander-Arnold is set to join Real Madrid during the summer when his contract at Liverpool expires at the end of the current season.

This is a massive blow for Arne Slot as the Premier League leaders will find it impossible to replace the 26-year-old as the England international is a generational talent, hence why he is wanted in Madrid.

Conor Bradley is expected to take over from Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool as the Northern Irishman has impressed whenever he has been given a chance, which was evident again on Sunday against Fulham.

Although the right-back has proven himself, it is still a risk and Liverpool may end up regretting not moving for a Champions League winner they had on their radar.

Liverpool should have moved for Joshua Kimmich

Liverpool were linked with a move for Joshua Kimmich at the start of 2025 as the German star had yet to pen a new deal with Bayern Munich ahead of his contract expiring at the end of the current campaign.

The Reds have been fans of the 30-year-old for a long time and even made contact with his representatives to enquire about a deal, however, the Germany international decide to sign a new contract with Bayern, which keeps him in the Bundesliga until 2029.

Bayern Munich take on Inter Milan this week in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie and ahead of the contest, it has emerged how impactful Kimmich has been in Europe’s elite competition.

The German star has the most touches, most accurate final third passes, most created chances, joint most accurate crosses and most big chances created by anyone in the entire competition.

This highlights that Kimmich is still operating at a very high level and seeing as the Bayern star could have been signed for free this summer, should Liverpool have pushed more?

The 30-year-old has a lot of experience, is a very versatile player, and he would have been able to aid Bradley’s development. Now, as a result of missing out on the German star, the Reds are unlikely to bring in a new right-back this summer.

Missing out on Joshua Kimmich has left Liverpool short

Kimmich would have been a great short-term replacement for Alexander-Arnold and missing out on the German means Jeremie Frimpong is now the only player Liverpool with the quality to replace the 26-year-old at Anfield.

The Bayern Munich star would have cost the Reds nothing, allowing Slot to focus on addressing other key areas of his squad, while still providing the Dutch coach with a quality option at both right-back and in the number six.

What is likely to have turned the Premier League leaders off Kimmich is his age and potentially the salary the 30-year-old would have demanded. From this point of view, a move for Kimmich made no sense, especially if Bradley is ready to step up for Liverpool next season.

If not, the Bayern star was the ideal replacement because at the end of the day, Liverpool may still need to dip into the transfer market to provide cover for the Northern Irish talent and may have now left themselves short.
