Michael Owen urges Liverpool to learn from Man City lesson with contract situation still unresolved

Liverpool are flying high in the Premier League and in Europe, but there is one factor putting a dampener on their season.

Despite their success on the pitch, the Reds still have the contract situations of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold looming over them.

None of the three yet are to pen to paper on a new Anfield deal, which has left many supporters in doubt ahead of next season.

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has echoed these worries, claiming FSG must learn from the recent mistakes of Premier League rivals Manchester City.

Michael Owen claims Liverpool need to avoid Man City rebuild mistake

RTK recently revealed that Liverpool players were growing unsettled over the certain future of their top stars – a feeling that is also felt by the Reds fanbase.

With that being said, Owen believes Liverpool must overcome the ‘test’ if one of the three does eventually leave Melwood this summer.

Speaking after Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Newcastle, the former striker told the Premier League that Liverpool must avoid the same problems currently taking place at Man City.

“That’s the next test, isn’t it? What happens if they leave, one or two of them leave? There is no replacement for Mo Salah, there is no replacement for Virgil van Dijk. I think they could get by without Trent Alexander-Arnold. That’s going to be the next test.

“You’ve seen what’s happened to Manchester City. A bit of an ageing team, with one or two big players missing and all of sudden it can fall down like a deck of cards. Liverpool will be looking at that and thinking that can’t happen to us. What’s the age of our group here? How are we going to replace the great players?”

Owen thinks Trent Alexander-Arnold is most likely to leave Liverpool

Sports lawyer Daniel Geey recently claimed that Salah is the most likely to leave Liverpool this summer – Owen however disagrees.

Real Madrid have been linked with Alexander-Arnold and it seems like Owen thinks the England right-back is the player most likely to leave Anfield.

“My opinion on the three is that Trent Alexander-Arnold is going to leave, Virgil van Dijk is going to stay and Mo Salah is a toss of a coin. If they can get two of three to stay, it will be a right result,” said the former Reds forward.

With Liverpool already targeting right-backs ahead of the summer window, it seems like Owen’s claims may carry some weight.
