Jamie Carragher says Mo Salah will surpass Steven Gerrard’s legacy at Liverpool if he does just one more thing this season

Steven Gerrard is widely regarded as Liverpool’s greatest-ever player.

The midfielder played over 700 games for the Reds throughout his career and was very influential in bringing the Champions League, UEFA Cup, FA Cup and League Cup back to Anfield.

The impressive thing about Gerrard was the fact that the Reds legend carried teams to trophies as the Merseyside club’s former captain did not always have the best players around him.

This is what has put Gerrard ahead of other Liverpool legends such as Kenny Daglish when it comes to the debate of who the greatest player to ever play for the club is.

That status may be under threat as Mohamed Salah’s 2024/25 campaign may propel him to the top of the list and Jamie Carragher suggests that he may change his mind if the Egyptian can do one more thing this season.

Jamie Carragher suggests Mohamed Salah can become Liverpool’s greatest player

Salah is chasing several Premier League records this season with the Egyptian superstar guaranteed to add to the 30 goals and 21 assists he has already provided for the Reds this season.

Arne Slot has been speaking about Salah’s Ballon d’Or chances on Tuesday and that is a realistic possibility for the 32-year-old, especially if he wins the Premier League and the Champions League over the coming months.

Should the winger win the biggest individual award in the sport or another PFA Players’ Player of the Year award, that could see the Egyptian become Liverpool’s greatest player in the eyes of Carragher.

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, the Sky Sports pundit said: “Great players come and I didn’t think ‘How could anyone do more than Stevie?’ he spent his whole career at the club, what happened in Istanbul and the cup final a year later.”

“But, Salah is going to get player of the year. I don’t think anyone has won Player of the Year three times, and if he wins the Ballon d’Or as well.

“I am thinking, ‘I hope Stevie is not watching’, even though he is my man in football and I have played with him. If someone argued that Salah was Liverpool’s number one player, if he wins the Ballon d’Or or another PFA Player of the Year, you can’t argue against it. The things he could achieve are mind-blowing.”

Gerrard recently saw Salah equal his penalty record at Liverpool but if things continue the way they have been going for the winger, the Egyptian’s legacy at Anfield could grow to insurmountable heights.

Mohamed Salah still has more to do at Liverpool to overtake Steven Gerrard

It is already hard to argue against Salah being Liverpool’s greatest player as the Egyptian has won everything at Anfield, in addition to all the goal contributions and records he has broken.

That legacy will only continue to grow as well, should the winger sign a new contract with the Merseyside club this summer, however, there is still a strong case to be made for Gerrard and Daglish.

The biggest point that can be made about Gerrard is the fact that he achieved major things with the Reds with players of less quality around him.

Had the former midfielder had a Virgil van Dijk behind him and a Salah to link up with for many years, who knows what he could have achieved?

This is a debate that could be discussed among Liverpool fans all day but one certain thing is that Salah is making his case stronger with each game that passes.
