Liverpool’s march towards the Premier League title continued last weekend, with a big win away at Manchester City.
Mohamed Salah’s record-breaking goal took the headlines but it was actually Liverpool’s defensive performance that has got the football world talking.
Gary Neville lauded Arne Slot’s tactics, meanwhile, Alan Shearer claimed Liverpool were ‘outstanding’ in thwarting Man City’s threat.
Having watched his beloved Citizens fail to lay a glove on the Reds, Micah Richards believes one Premier League manager, in particular, should take note of Slot’s tactics at the Etihad.

Micah Richards says Ruben Amorim can learn from Arne Slot
Richards backed Slot following Liverpool’s disappointing FA Cup exit against Plymouth, and it seems like the ex-Man City defender is a big fan of the Reds boss.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Richards sang the praises of the Dutchman – even claiming that Man United manager Ruben Amorim should learn from Slot’s adaptability.
“It was really good tactically, normally they would go with a Diaz on the left or a Jota upfront. But they went with Curtis Jones didn’t they, sort of patrolling the left-hand side. They went with another one in midfield for the transitions and it just worked. I agree with Alan.
“We expect Liverpool in previous seasons to be gung-ho, really going at teams but they don’t need to. This is what we talk about with Amorim at Man United, we are not talking about having to change your tactics completely, it’s just about adapting to the game you are playing and that’s what Slot is so good at doing.”
Liverpool proven right by picking Slot over Amorim
Richards’ claims that the Man United boss should take note of Slot’s achievements are particularly poignant as Liverpool could have actually had Amorim in their dugout instead of the Dutchman.
Following the announcement that Jurgen Klopp would be leaving the club in 2024, the Reds actually held talks with Amorim for him to become their new manager.
Liverpool though decided against appointing Amorim, with some viewing the Portuguese’s tactical approach as the reason behind the decision.
| Premier League stats | Ruben Amorim | Arne Slot |
| Games managed | 15 | 27 |
| Won | 4 | 19 |
| Drawn | 3 | 7 |
| Lost | 8 | 1 |
| Points per game | 1.00 | 2.37 |
If you analyse Amorim’s start to life in the Premier League, it is fair to say FSG definitely made the correct decision last summer.
