Liverpool managed their first away win at Manchester City in ten years, coming away with a well-earned 2-0 victory.

Having endured countless tough tests against Pep Guardiola’s side, some Reds fans may have been left surprised at the comfortable nature of the win.

Liverpool’s clever set-piece routine got them in front early on and Arne Slot’s men would then add a second through Dominik Szoboszlai before half-time.

After going two goals ahead, the Reds would sit back and soak up the City pressure, with Liverpool only having 34% possession at the Etihad.

Despite not having much of the ball, Alan Shearer believes the Reds executed their game plan perfectly against the reigning champions.

Slot has earned widespread praise for his tactical set-up, with Gary Neville admiring Liverpool’s tactics up against Guardiola’s possession heavy-system.

Shearer has also been keen to compliment Liverpool’s performance, telling the Rest Is Football podcast that Slot and co ‘did a job’ on Manchester City.

“I thought Liverpool were absolutely outstanding. I thought they went a did a job on City today.

“I thought without doubt that were prepared to let City have the majority of possession and that never bothered them. In fact that probably suited them. I thought there were so many impressive performances from Liverpool players today. Outstanding.”

Liverpool and Arne Slot proved Pep Guardiola wrong at the Etihad

Another pundit who has sung the praises of the Reds is Frank Leboeuf who lauded Liverpool’s direct approach at the Etihad.

Similar to Shearer, the former Chelsea defender was impressed at how Liverpool managed to stifle the Man City attack.

The stats show that despite not having much of the ball, the Reds were still able to big create chances – racking up a higher xG than City despite having eight shots fewer.
