Arne Slot’s side took a step closer to being crowned as Premier League champions, after overcoming Manchester City in a 2-0 win.

A clever set-piece goal and a smart Dominik Szoboszlai finish were enough for the Reds to take home all three points – a result that takes them eleven points clear at the top.

The win was made even more impressive by the fact that Liverpool hadn’t won away at Manchester City for ten years.

Slot’s side would overcome that curse, and put down the Citizens with relative ease, sitting back and soaking up the pressure from the reigning champions – something that has been showcased in the stats.

Liverpool had record lowest possession in Man City win

Slot changed Liverpool’s formation versus Man City and it seems like the Dutchman also tinkered with his approach to possession as well.

The Reds have averaged the third-highest possession in the Premier League so far this season, controlling the ball for 57.3% of matches (according to FBref).

That possession-heavy football however was not on display at the Etihad, with Slot’s side reverting to more of a defence-first counter-attack approach after going two goals ahead.

With that being said, the Reds would actually only have 34% possession against City, their lowest amount in a Premier League victory on record.

Arne Slot repeats Jurgen Klopp record

Slot had no sympathy for Pep Guardiola after Liverpool beat Man City 2-0 back in December – a sentiment Reds fans will no doubt echo after years of heartache against the Citizens.

Man City have put a dent in Liverpool’s title ambitions on a number of occasions, but that simply hasn’t been the case this season, with the Reds doing the double over the Citizens for the first time since Jurgen Klopp’s maiden season in charge.

Guardiola’s side are of course not the force they once were, but to do the double over them after years of falling short, will only further cement Slot’s growing reputation on Merseyside.
