Liverpool fans were rocked by the news that Diogo Jota has picked up another injury and will miss another significant period of time.

The Portuguese forward came off the bench to equalise for the Reds last Tuesday as Arne Slot’s men came from behind to earn a point against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Following that contest, the forward would miss Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Brentford on Saturday as fears over Jota’s fitness emerged last Thursday.

That injury is now worse than feared with the Dutch coach admitting that Jota is unavailable for Liverpool’s clash with Lille in the Champions League on Tuesday night as the Portugal international has “overloaded a certain muscle a little bit.”

In the 24 minutes the forward spent on the pitch against Nottingham Forest, Jota showed what Liverpool are missing when the former Wolves star is not around.

The 28-year-old is lethal in the opposition box but with this latest injury, Liverpool may have to consider moving Jota on and his replacement may already be within Slot’s squad.

Diogo Jota injury provides Jayden Danns a platform to shine

With Jota expected to be out for a few weeks, the Portuguese star’s absence will likely result in Jayden Danns being placed on the Liverpool bench for the Reds’ upcoming fixtures.

Danns has had to bide his time this season at Liverpool as the striker missed the entire opening part of the 2024/25 campaign with a back injury before returning to action in December.

The 19-year-old came off the bench in Liverpool’s Carabao Cup quarter-final win over Southampton before getting another chance to shine against Accrington Stanley.

In the 18 minutes of action he received against the League 2 outfit, Danns would continue where he left off last season as the forward scored in front of the Kop.

This was the youngster’s third goal for the Merseyside club after Jurgen Klopp showed faith in him last season, which included bringing the striker on in the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea.

Liverpool have yet to decide if they will send Danns on loan this month as regular senior football could be crucial for his development ahead of next season.

The next few months are big for the striker and impressing Slot could see him take Darwin Nunez’s spot in the Dutch coach’s squad.

Doubts over Darwin Nunez’s future should fuel the remainder of the season for Jayden Danns

Danns will likely get very few moments to impress slot over the coming weeks but when he does get on the field of play, the 19-year-old has to make it memorable.

Nunez has been linked to Saudi Arabia in recent weeks as doubts continue over the Uruguayan’s future at Anfield despite netting a brace against Brentford on Saturday.

The 25-year-old has struggled this season as Slot’s style of play has not suited the Uruguay international.

Jota’s injury, in addition to Nunez’s situation, provides the perfect cocktail for Danns to shine over the coming weeks. It is now up to the 19-year-old to impress his boss whenever opportunities arrive.
