Liverpool loanee Ben Doak continued his career progression after another start went his way in the 0-0 draw versus Portugal.

Doak enjoyed a superb full Scotland debut against Croatia on Saturday, despite his country losing 2-1 in the Nations League.

But they bounced back to secure a fantastic point against Portugal on Tuesday, with Liverpool winger Doak once again entrusted from the start by Steve Clarke.

Clarke is excited for Doak’s future, with the winger playing 77 minutes in Croatia and 67 minutes at Hampden Park against Portugal.

Scotland are, however, rock bottom of their Nations League group, with just one point from their four matches so far.

Liverpool loanee Ben Doak rated as Scotland draw with Portugal

And Doak had a mixed evening in the eyes of the Scottish national press, with the Edinburgh Evening News handing him a 5/10 rating as they wrote: “Quiet to start but slowly got to grips with having to track back while also hold some attacking threat.

“A few loose passes but some flashes of quality too. Good for his development to be exposed to this kind of challenge.”

But the Glasgow Times were impressed with the winger, who earned a 7/10 rating with the comment: “The teenage protege showed no shortage of confidence by running at Antonio Silva and Joao Cancelo regularly when given the opportunity to get on the ball.

“The winger played his defence into trouble with a tippy-tappy pass inside, but the Portuguese couldn’t capitalise on the situation right after half-time.

“Probably came inside too often rather than looking to go round the outside to the byline, but another positive showing from the young man.”

Is Ben Doak heading for Liverpool stardom under Arne Slot?

It was certainly another step in the right direction for Doak, who left Anfield this summer to join Middlesbrough on loan.

He rubbed shoulders with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Diogo Jota in Glasgow, alongside Liverpool teammate Andy Robertson.

The young winger will undoubtedly be learning a lot from the Scotland captain, with Doak likely to link up with him on Merseyside again next summer.

Doak will have to compete with several world-class stars should he return under Arne Slot next season, but he is certainly on the right track.

It is, however, important to ease the teenager into his potential stardom, with the Middlesbrough man still only 18 years old.

He does already have 10 senior Liverpool appearances to his name, but will be forced to work extremely hard to add to that tally in the future.
