Scotland’s Ben Doak explains why he really decided to leave Celtic for Liverpool in 2022

Ben Doak joined Liverpool from Celtic in 2022 in a transfer that already looks to have benefited the Reds greatly.

The 18-year-old winger is regarded as one of the most exciting prospects in British football, with Doak currently thriving out on loan with Middlesbrough having made ten appearances under Jurgen Klopp for Liverpool in the previous seasons.

A full Scotland international, Doak is well on his way to becoming a superstar in England having made the bold decision at 16 to leave Scottish giants Celtic to sign for Liverpool, where the forward has developed nicely at Anfield.

And Doak has now shared why he really decided to leave Celtic for Liverpool two years ago.

Doak ‘didn’t see any cons’ in leaving Celtic for Liverpool

Speaking to the press on international duty, the Scotland wonderkid shared how he saw no cons in leaving Celtic to join Liverpool, with the Premier League side having one of the best track records in developing young players into superstars.

Although Doak has suffered numerous injury problems since moving to Liverpool, the forward now seems to be over these issues having now become a regular under Michael Carrick at Middlesbrough this season.

And for the teenager, leaving Celtic for Liverpool was the right decision despite the magnitude of such a move at that stage in his career, with Doak seemingly pleased with the outcome two years on from leaving Glasgow.

Doak said: “To be honest, I felt like that was the right move at the time to go down south and go and play and train at an elite level. Everyone knows how good the Liverpool squad has been and how they are doing currently. They’re top of the league, so I didn’t see any cons to going there.”

There’s no denying that had Doak stayed at Celtic the forward would have likely been a regular for the reigning Scottish champions, such is the 18-year-old’s quality and world-class potential.

And although regular minutes would have been perfect for Doak, spending two years training with Liverpool’s superstar players like Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold is something the youngster would have missed out on had he stayed at Celtic.

As a result, Doak more than made the right decision to move to Liverpool when he did at 16-years-old, with the winger looking like a potential starter for Arne Slot’s side at his current developmental pace.
